Asbestos Surveys
A key stage in managing asbestos is to identify the location, type, condition and extent of any Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs). This can be achieved by conducting an asbestos survey.
The survey should be in accordance with HSE guidance note MDHS 100 which describe three types:

  • Type 1 - Presumptive
  • Type 2 - Visual with samples
  • Type 3 – Intrusive

The new H.S.E. Regulations, requires the employer, property owner or manager to make an assessment as to whether asbestos is or liable to be present, internally or externally and to produce a written plan to locate and manage the asbestos and to implement the plan in an asbestos management programme.

Asbestos surveys are a current requirement for any building where asbestos may be present. Generally speaking this is accepted to be any building built before 1980, although some buildings built after this period may contain Asbestos Cement and even Asbestos Insulation Board.
